Set up multi-step leave approval
Make staff leave requests pass through more than one person, step by step, before they are approved.

Use this when one person should not approve leave alone. For example, a head of department approves first, then the principal. EduHost does this with approval flows. A flow is a list of steps, and each flow can be switched on or off.
Before you start
- Set up your leave types first. If you see No leave types yet, click Set up leave types.
- Decide who should approve at each step, and in what order.
- You need a role that can open Approvals. If you cannot see it, ask your school admin. They can change this under Roles & Permissions.
Steps
- In the sidebar, click Approvals.
- Open the approval flow for staff leave.
- Add the first step. Choose who approves at this step.
- Add the next step and choose who approves there. Repeat for each step you need.
- Check that the steps are in the right order. The first step decides first.
- Switch the flow on.
- Click Save.
What happens next
- A staff member applies for leave as usual.
- The request goes to the person at the first step. When they approve, it moves to the next step.
- Each approver sees the request in Things to do today on their dashboard, under requests waiting for them.
- On the leave screen, a request that is still moving through the steps shows In approvals →. Click it to see where the request is.
Good to know
- Each flow has its own on/off switch. You can switch the leave flow off at any time.
- The same Approvals page is also used for other requests, such as expenses.
- To learn how one person approves or rejects a request, read Approve leave requests.
- Staff can follow their own leave in What staff see in My HR.
